China retail tour: exploring the e-commerce market of China

China has emerged itself as the world leader in e-commerce. Chinese tech giants contributed to the Chinese digital economy with innovative and unique developments and are changing the global retail industry. One of the greatest trend within this field is cross-border e-commerce.

As more Chinese are getting exposed by international brands, they rely a lot on cross-border e-commerce to purchase products that are not domestically available. International brands have a good reputation among Chinese consumers, especially health and nutrition, beauty, and baby products from abroad are popular to be imported into China. Consequently, popular platforms such as Alibaba TMall Global and JD Worldwide are providing official sources for Chinese customers to purchase overseas products.

Program preview

During the China retail trip, we will visit various Chinese companies that have achieve big successes in the field of e-commerce. Hereby, we will visit two cities: Shanghai and Hangzhou. Furthermore, participants will have exclusive access to the China International Import Expo (CIIE).

Shanghai

Shanghai is the hotspot for global retail innovations. Various global brands have established flagship stores in this metropolitan to offer revolutionary shopping experiences to its customers. During the trip, we will visit Nike House of Innovation, a new store concept that offers personalised and digitally-connected shopping journeys. Furthermore, we will discover the technological transformation in the retail supply chain with a visit to the unmanned distribution centre of JD Logistics. Other interesting and unique companies to be visited include for instance, Little Red Book and Pinduoduo – two innovative e-commerce platforms that implemented social media aspects in their business model – and Secoo and VIP – two luxury platforms from China.

Hangzhou

Hangzhou is known as the e-commerce capital of China. Headquarters of Alibaba and Netease are examples of successful tech giants that have settled themselves in vibrant start-up environment. During the trip, we will emerge ourselves in the latest developments on digital payments and data management. Through company visits, we will learn about the encompassing digital ecosystems of these global giants.

China International Import Expo (CIIE)

The CIIE will be held at the National Exhibition and Convention Centre in Shanghai from 5 November until 10 November. The last version in 2018 attracted over one million visitors and 2.900 exhibitors from more than 140 countries. The CIIE is supported by the Chinese government as part of the One Belt, One Road initiative. It aims to promote and facilitate Chinese companies to access the foreign market as well as to provide foreign access to the Chinese market to strengthen economic cooperation and trade. Participating countries and companies can demonstrate their (international) business developments and showcase international products globally.

Participants of the trip will have the opportunity to visit the exhibition site of the CIIE and present themselves at the Global E-Retailing China Summit & Cross-Border E-Commerce Conference, an official event supported by the CIIE. This is a unique occasion to show introduce yourself to the Chinese market and get inspired by the exhibitions of other global enterprises.
